Dominion

Find meat stuck in teeth of glaze-eyed Beasts,
Of prey from some dangerless lands,
Pluck out what was left from unprincipled feasts,
And show them the fibrous strands.

Upon seeing these, it’d cause no unease,
Save for those with the conscience of rams,
To dismantlers by degrees, as dutch elm disease,
In unremorseful-laden hands.

Find wings that cling under nails of Werethings,
From the backs of fledgeling targets,
Scrape out what was clawed from their playthings,
And show them how aimless they marked it.

Upon seeing this, there’d be nothing amiss,
Unless they had the heart of a lamb,
To selfish-seekers, as a bloodsucking kiss,
In unhonored-laden hands.

The conduct of Beasts and Werethings
Shall have no dominion in me;
Integrity from within reigns and rings,
Except not occasionally.

    1. Thank you! That was my favorite word in the poem. yeah i like it dark. I thought of it the other day because Ward Clever and I were joking and I told him I turn into an ogre at midnight and he said “so you’re a wereogre” and i was like oh! I’ll use the word werethings. after i posted the poem, i googled the word and it turns out it was kind of a thing but i can’t remember where. in a game or something? isn’t it cool when you think of something and then someone else has already too?

  1. This was like Tolkien meets Shel Silverstein at a Lovecraft convention. Fantastic!
And I love being an inspiration for one of your words. You’re an inspiration 🙂

            1. Jo. Holy shit. I just went to your blog and picked a short story of yours to read (from your publications) and I read “Lullaby.” My God I loved it so much. Skillful story telling, art in every line and a terrifying image in each as well. I’m a fan. I have so much more improving to do to come up to this level. I got chills because, not to make this about me, but I wrote a story where a creepy lullaby is sung and slowly revealed throughout the story too. So I was so glad to enjoy a story of my own personal taste. I also wrote a story about two men waking up chained and imprisoned in a pit as well. (both are on this blog ). I can’t wait to read more of your short stories. That is my favorite format since I was a child–short fiction.

    1. Yayyy! I’m so happy! That’s exactly what happened to me when I wrote it. It’s like this speaker carries on at length about opportunists and monstrous people, how heartless and sickening they are! How dare they and they don’t even! I’d never dream of stooping to that …except sometimes. Hahaha. Thanks for reading and for your comment SNTC!!!

    1. I’m in shock. A blogger of your magnitude and literary caliber complimenting my poem? Full disclosure: I worked so hard on this poem to the point that I felt almost embarrassed about the amount of time spent and the fact that it has not even touched on excellence. Also, prayers answered–another wordpresser who appreciates the intentional use of literary devices! Huzzah. So happy you came to visit my blog today. I remember, for a fact, reading several pieces on your blog, specifically about some James Joyce and classic, sacred poetry. I am so appreciative to get your comment today. Your criticism, positive or negative, is extremely valuable to me. Thanks again! Looking forward to continued, mutual blogship with you. 🙂

      1. The pleasure is all mine! Your poetry’s excellent – it’s obvious you’ve worked at it because the imagery and language (that assonance among other things) work together very effectively. I look forward to reading more – and thanks for reading our posts! 🙂

  2. You are seriously unique and I am all aswoon here. I’m glad I was hanging onto Vanessa’s skirts and then fell off at your door. Grabbed onto someone’s shoe as they hurried in then overstayed my welcome. That’s me, wanting to overstay my welcome on your site. Damn you are good!
